Dal fry is an Indian dish which is prepared using lentils. It is an Indian famous dish prepared all over India. Dal fry is consumed with rice and roti which is called as "Dal Chawal (Rice) and Roti" in Hindi.
Dal fry is a combination of Toor dal, Tomato, Spices and some basic ingredients. All ingredients are equally important which makes this dish delicious. Tadka makes the dish little spicy, curry leaves give aromatic flavor to the dish and coriander leaves add freshness to the dish. I always add coriander leaves to all my dishes. This is a simple dal fry which is made without onion.
Dal fry can be served with plain rice, Jeera rice, Pulao etc. Dal fry and Jeera rice combination is loved by Indians. This is really simple recipe to make. So lets begin with the requirement of ingredients.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Pigeon Pea Lentil
- 1 tsp Udit Dal
- 3-4 Methi Dana (Fenugreek Seeds)
- 1 Green Chili
- 7-8 Curry leaves
- 1 1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds
- A pinch of Asafoetida
- 1 tsp Turmeric powder
- 2 chopped Tomatoes
- Oil as required
- Salt as per taste
- Some Coriander Leaves
- 2 tsp Ghee for tadka
- 2 Red chilies

Instruction:
Wash and rinse pigeon pea lentils in water for 2-3 times. Add some water to the lentil and pressure cook till it completely cooks. When it completely cook mash the lentil and keep it aside.
Now heat the pan, add oil, add udit dal and methi dana (Fenugreek Seeds). Fry it nicely till it becomes reddish in colour. Now add chopped green chili. Saute it for a minute and add curry leaves, asafoetida (Hing). Turmeric powder and 1 tsp mustard seeds. When mustard seeds start to crackle, add chopped tomatoes. Saute it till the tomatoes become mashy.
Now the next step is to add mashed lentils. Add water same quantity as lentils or as required. Add salt to the mixture. Let it cook for 4-5 minutes on medium flame. Season it with fresh coriander leaves and put the gas flame off.
Now its time to give tadka to the dal fry. Heat the small pot, add ghee, red chilies and 1/2 tsp mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds start to crackle off the gas flame. Add this to the dal fry. Dal fry is ready to serve hot.
Tip: You can also add Kasturi methi instead of methi dana (Fenugreek Seeds) if you like.
